This place has got to be a front for some bullshit Norfolk French mob. The place looks hood and the owner is super abrasive, but that's what all good home-in-the-walls are like, right? Not this one man. Me and my woman bought two croissants, one chocolate ball (he angrily corrected us to say "Rum Ball"), and one Apple pastry. Dude, read the other reviews, because they all tell the truth. It was $19 for all of it. I've never tasted a croissant that was worth 5 bucks, and this bakery didn't offer one. I still paid, but he must have seen my wide eyes because he immediately stated "If it's too expensive just don't buy it." Sweet dude. I get how buying things works. Never going back.
Why is there always ONE GUY,that makes some rude and insulting remark? Great bakery with good solid deli fare.
Once or so a year I have to go back for the hot pastrami on fresh baked rolls (suggest for a new visitor avoid the small, take a friend and share the medium). These are large. It is not polite to watch your lunch companion try to chomp on one. Confess I have been going there for more than 20 years. Have never bought their pastry. Did taste the broth for the oyster stew - excellent.
BEWARE! ASK FOR PRICE!
I suppose I am addicted to the pastrami, and like any addict, tolerate whatever the current price is.
I grew up going to my favorite French Deli and am so glad I found this spot! This is not subway, you're not going to get a basic sandwhich for cheap. The bread is made there, the meat is cured there, it's a family owned establishment... The sandwhiches are delicious! I don't even like pastrami that much and loved the sandwhich my boyfriend got. I had the turkey and it was just as delicious. The owner or man who was there was friendly and let us sample desserts and was just... awesome! It's a great feel there, like you're in a small community enjoying a sandwhich made just for you. It's $12-$16 for the sandwhiches but they are huge and well worth it if you have any sense at all.
I used to live a few block away and have always loved this place. 20 years later still the same awesome food. Pastrami sandwich and orange donuts. So good.
